BREAKAWAY SURFBUSINESS STRATEGY

With immense joy, I'd like to announce that...

BreakAway Surf is now amongst the UK's fastest growing surf communities! 🏄🌊🏆

Back in early Jan,
Ahmed (BreakAway founder, and friend) sent me a few pictures of his mates and him surfing in Morocco. And, before I knew it, he had setup BA's social media pages and even registered the company.

Watching someone build something from scratch is amazing. But to be part of it is a real privilege.

I joined BreakAway Surf as Marketing Manager on 26th Jan.

The first thing Ahmed,
Khizar (Tech Lead), and I decided was to kill off BreakAway, the "surf travel company".

...and create BreakAway, the Surfer's Community 💙🏄‍♀️

This simple pivot helped us add more soul to the effort because...

Companies are transactional. But communities are holistic.

See this cute picture of the BreakAway UK community members chilling together:

But, of course, even communities need money to stay afloat.

Cue: Our monetization plan.

At
SBMC, which facilitates BreakAway Surf, we believe in cultivating holistic relationships with anyone who takes an interest in our work.

I lent this strategy to BreakAway: give something meaningful to prospects (without taking money), build Real Relationships (!!!), and use a tiered paid activity system to promote inclusivity.

The goal is not to sell tickets for surf trips. But rather, to foster a sense of belonging amongst surfers, new and old. We started with unticketed surfskate plans in London, and expanded into bigger paid trips.

People could choose to attend London meets for free (surfskate) or relatively low cost at places like
The Wave (London surf spot). After experiencing the community in action, they could decide to go on a bigger adventure with us (so far we've done Morocco and a few spots in the UK).

In time, I predicted people would willingly begin to pay for big ticket items (trips). This turned out to be very true, especially because the community just had a major trip to Newquay - we sold most tickets organically, and the community feedback was AMAZING!

The strategy worked.
:)

Shoutout to
Ahmed (@surfakhi) for being such an amazing Founder, and for letting me a part of this "company." I've learnt a lot from this experience, and am eager to learn more.

I've thoroughly enjoyed watching it grow these past 3 months (0 to almost 4000 followers, 260+ community members, and a team that's power-packed with super cool people!).

I only played a small strategic role in all this, but it doesn't matter: If there's one thing that's for sure at BreakAway, it's that no role is too small - and a win for one of us is a win for all!

And that's exactly the kind of attitude that grows a good business.
